In the last seven years, breast cancer diagnosis has increased by 20 percent worldwide and has now become the leading cause of cancer deaths in women. With these growing rates, more research is needed on how one can prevent these cancers. What better way to prevent cancer than by adding this simple ingredient to your diet- olive oil.

Mediterranean diets receive a lot of attention in the research as there seems to be a number of health benefits from this combination of foods. A study done in Spain and published in the JAMA Internal Medicine Journal examined the breast cancer rates following women for a period of five years. Three different diets were examined. There were a low-fat diet, a Mediterranean diet with 30 grams of mixed nuts per day, and a Mediterranean diet with four tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Following these diet interventions, the women who followed a Mediterranean diet with the olive oil added had a 68 percent lower risk of breast cancer diagnosis when compared to the low-fat diet. Those on the Mediterranean diet with mixed nuts also saw a reduction of risk by 41percent. The researchers concluded that olive oil helped reduce the risk of breast cancer and could be used as a preventative measure.
