At least six brands of popular children’s crayons and fingerprint test kits have been found to contain asbestos.
According to an article published online by Asbestos Nation, Amscan Crayons, Disney Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Crayons, Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Crayons, Saban’s Power Rangers Super Megaforce Crayons, EduScience Delux Forensics Lab Kit and Inside Intelligence Secret Spy Kit all contain the substance.
Asbestos kills up to 15,000 Americans annually, but is still legally used in products.
A child exposed to asbestos is almost four times more likely to develop mesothelioma than an adult 25-year-old exposed to the harmful substance.
Mesothelioma is a lung disease caused by asbestos, according to the U.K. Committee of Carcinogenicity.
While some believe that when the asbestos crayons are eaten the body cannot melt the wax and free the asbestos fibers, there still are questions as to why there even is asbestos in crayons.
In the case of the finger printing kits, the asbestos fibers are free to be inhaled as the child uses the powders.
According to labels on the packages, all the toys and crayons tested positive for asbestos were made in China.
