“The brain is a sexual organ, wired to procreate.”- excerpt from The Mating Mind, a video by the ingenious Jason Silva
The more I learn about sexuality as it relates to health, the more intrigued I become.
At a time when we are all resolving to be better versions of ourselves, I question our intentions. My hesitations to make this yet another post on how to improve our health in 2016 were solidified after watching this recent TED talk which confirmed that the best indicator of a life well lived isn’t exercise, dieting, meditation, or even a better connection to nature, it is, in fact, our relationships.
Marianne Williamson speaks to the importance of healthy relationships passionately in her Super Soul Session where she clearly explains how we can zap out of this desire to look only after ourselves and give in to the Universe calling us to be better for each other’s sake.
One concept I’ve recently come across that I think rests at the bed of this issue is that of Sexual Fluidity. Miley Cyrus brilliantly defines it through her own sexual choices: “I am literally open to every single thing that is consenting and doesn’t involve an animal and everyone is of age. Everything that’s legal, I’m down with. Yo, I’m down with any adult ― anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me.” Read more here.
Not only does this approach to love do away with biases and discrimination based on sexual preference (are we actually still fighting against homophobia?!), but it also helps us bypass the boxes that identifying as a certain gender create. Lastly, it allows for the freedom to recognize that our needs and desires may change over time.
This is important to me and the work that I do because I believe it is paramount to show ourselves respect and adoration for the choices that we make when it comes to sex and desire. I believe there is a deep truth that rests in the heart that is far too often muffled and cast aside because of fear that we want what we shouldn’t want. By tapping into these curiosities, we open the door to confidence and creativity – key components in overall health and happiness.
This is not to say that anything you want should then be yours for the taking – just the opposite, really. There are some awful people out there (often a result of being mistreated themselves) who want things – sexually or not – that harm others. My question is: if the rest of us could find it in our hearts to always act with love, for ourselves first, then for those around us, would that not create a force and a voice against all the horrible things going on in the world today?
I’ll leave you with this Indigenous prayer that is especially appropriate as we enter into the Rest & Cleansing Moon:
Great Spirit, help me to open myself to receiving love and support. To maintain healthy, loving, and balanced relationships with others. Help me accept that I receive love because I am worthy of love.
