Increase GREENness to Improve Longevity in Women

Ladies listen up, you may reap BIG benefits by surrounding yourself with more greenery!

A study published online April 14, 2016 in the journal, Environmental Health Perspectives concluded that higher levels of green vegetation were associated with decreased mortality in women.

Researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston used data from the US-based Nurses’ Health Study prospective cohort to examine the association between mortality and residential greenness.

They followed 108,630 women and observed 8,604 deaths between 2000-2008. Greenness surrounding each participant’s address was assessed using satellite imagery. Women were then divided into 5 groups, depending on how much greenery they were surrounded by.

They reported that women living in the highest quintile of cumulative average greenness in the 250m area around their home had a 12% lower rate of all-cause non-accidental mortality compared to those in the lowest quintile. These women were also 34 percent less likely to die from a respiratory illness than women living in the most paved-over areas. Women living amidst greenery were 13 percent less likely to die of cancer and 41% less likely to die of kidney disease.

Women living in greener areas might be more inclined towards physical activity and might have better access to areas which facilitate this.

It is hypothesized that greenness benefits health by reducing exposure to things like pollution and noise. It also can provide a location for social engagement thereby reducing psychological distress and depression.
