Dr. Taryn Deane, ND

Hi, and welcome to the health revolution.

Why mark business proposals at home, when you can do it here?

The way that we receive, store and access information has changed significantly over the last several years. This can be terrifying or thrilling, but in either case it is game changing.

History

Born in 1985, I grew up surrounded by technology significantly more than my parents (and even siblings) did. Even so, my prime learning years seem like a different world compared to how students growing up today live. Here’s an idea of what it was like on the East Coast of Canada back then:

  • I mostly used our home computer to play Duke Nukem, Commander Keen, and Skyroads.
  • When we got dial-up, I remember companies started listing websites on their advertisements and I would write them all down on a list to look up. I was in awe of the information that I now had access to. Wild to me that I am now one of those companies with my own site (taryndeane.com)!
  • My first email address ([email protected] – how embarrassing) was created in grade 6.
  • Got a cell phone in 2nd year undergrad. Prior to that our family had a brick-sized car phone that plugged into the cigarette lighter.
  • Started texting in 3rd year and had a hard time with T9 after being “anti-text” for quite some time (choosing to phone people when they sent texts to me which was probably really annoying).
  • Purchased my first computer (MacBook) in 4th year undergrad, newly able to type up notes during my kinesiology classes.
  • Finally cracked and bought an iPhone in my 3rd year at naturopathic college, getting email to my person for the first time.

Hard to believe I ever survived without; although, despite my access to increasingly more technological tools, the most effective pattern for storing info in my brain remains the same: I write and rewrite, an rewrite some more (ie. rote learning). I reorganize and summarize. I create charts, mind maps, flowcharts and bullet points. I am a visual learner and after 20 years in school, I have gotten pretty good at it.
One of the big reasons I decided to pursue this career was because I wanted to know everything about health.

Motivation

  • As a teacher (surrounded by a family of educators), I try to pass on as much information as possible to make the transition from student to practitioner as smooth as possible for naturopaths and nutritionists – improving their chance of survival.
  • As a “normal” person, I unintentionally squeal at animals, try to finish crosswords, eat Wendy’s (occasionally) and get a bit too competitive at co-ed rec league sports.

Why you should care?

After years of treating others, building businesses and finally following my own advice, I truly believe I can teach you how to build the skills to be your best self: body, mind & spirit. As a result, it will be a good push for me to get more content out for you to enjoy and share with your buds.

You may be interested if you’re an entrepreneur with a desire to help others and make an impact in the world, but aren’t too sure about where to start or are overwhelmed by ongoing health (physical & emotional) issues that are getting in the way of having a job and relationships that matter.

Each month, I will be choosing one item to focus on for my NatPath article. I’ll employ my chart-making, color-coding, 1-page-summary-sheet-creating skills and you’ll get the Coles Notes version. Below is the beginning of my list of intriguing topics I hope to cover in the coming months:This isn’t for you if you already know everything, don’t think climate change is concerning, dislike animals or believe our medical system in North America is sufficient as is.

Deane_headshot_revisedDr. Taryn Deane ND hails from New Brunswick but now calls Vancouver home, where she moved 7 years ago to study Naturopathic Medicine. She currently practices downtown at Evoke Integrative Medicine, where she specializes in skin, sex and self-esteem by following a unique holistic approach to the underserved population suffering from these ailments.

Born into a family of teachers, it is no surprise that when she is not practicing, Dr. Deane is committed to improving the education of holistic healthcare practitioners. She’s thrilled to be teaching at both her alma mater – the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine – as Chair of Clinical Diagnosis, and at the Institute for Holistic Nutrition where she passionately teaches nutritionists about the ups and downs of being an entrepreneur. In her spare time, she loves playing sports, dancing and spending time wandering around the Kitsilano community with her rescue mutt, Monte.
