CUERNAVACA, Mexico – Prolonged breast feeding can help children avoid obesity and high blood cholesterol, a study has shown.
The study’s aim was to assess the association between breast feeding and obesity with cardiometabolic makers in 4-year-olds. It was conducted on Mexican children.
Study findings were published in April’s edition of The Journal of Nutrition
The researchers studied 727 4-year-old Mexican children by collecting breast feeding information and found that those who were breast fed past 12 months of age showed lower adiposity. The scientists have concluded that prolonged breast feeding leads later to better cardiometabolic health.
Study participants also were subjected to non-fasting blood samples. Data modeled associations of breast feeding with the children’s body mass index, serum total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, and insulin.
