(NaturalPath) There are many benefits to eating citrus fruits, including that they have been recognized as some of the most high-consumption fruits in terms of energy, nutrients and health supplements. Citrus also have flavonoids, alkaloids, limonoids, coumarins, carotenoids, phenolic acids, and essentials oils. Citrus has amazing anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, as well as cardiovascular protective effects, neuroprotective effects, etc. Common citrus fruits are oranges, mandarins, limes, lemons, grapefruits, and citrons.

1. Anti-Inflammatory

The anti-inflammatory properties of citrus fruits help deal with chronic inflammatory diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and colon cancer.

2. Anti-Cancer

Citrus fruits are high in secondary metabolites, including flavonoids, limonoids, and coumarins, which are associated with a reduced risk of cancer, including gastric cancer, breast cancer, lung tumorigenesis, colonic tumorigenesis, hepatocarcinogenesis, and hematopoietic malignancies, etc.

3. Flavonoids

Dietary hesperetin possessed antiproliferative ability against chemically-induced colon tumorigenesis. Apigenin was able to cause cell death of human pancreatic cancer cells. Poncirin showed a significant in vitro inhibitory effect on the growth of the human gastric cancer cells, in a dose-dependent manner. Tangeretin caused arrest of the cell-cycle progression and growth inhabitation in the incubation of colon adenocarcinoma cells. Quercetin was found to exhibit a suppressive effective in colon carcinogenesis and human cervical cancer cells, but it was found to be ineffective in mammary carcinogenesis.

4. Limonoids

There are anti-proliferative properties of limonoids. Additionally, their cytotoxic effect was more pronounced in estrogen-responsive breast cancer cells. The combinations of linonoids and curcumin were effective in inducing apoptosis in SW480 cells. Furthermore, linonoids and curcumin exhibited synergistic inhibition of proliferation of colon cancer cells.

5. Cardiovascular Protective Effects

Large epidemiological studies frequently link an increased consumption of flavonoid-rich foods with reduced cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, through the impact on blood lipid, blood glucose and vascular function, which is why consumption of citrus fruits is so important.
