A study out of the University of Washington tested various wines for arsenic content and found that out of 65 tested, all of them contained arsenic levels above that which is allowed in drinking water. Drinking water in the US is allowed to contain 10 parts per billion and the wines ranged from containing 10-76 parts per billion with the average being 24 parts per billion.
Another study explored various products found in our diet and determined it is the diet overall that one should worry about. Some products do have higher arsenic content such as apple juice, seafood, rice and cereal bars. In fact even some infant formulas were relatively high in arsenic. In general with a balanced diet this won’t be a problem. However, if one is consuming large amounts of the higher arsenic-containing foods, especially pregnant women or children, that is when there is cause for concern.
