The Turkish Journal of Gastroenterology conducted a study to determine if there was a link between couples with unexplained infertility (UEI) and Celiac Disease (CD).
First off, the researchers explained what Celiac Disease was by saying, “Celiac Disease (CD) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by small intestinal malabsorption and diarrhea, triggered by the ingestion of food products containing gluten.”
The study took 68 couples dealing with UEI from January to June 2014 as their sample group and began by using basic fertility tests to determine a diagnosis of UEI. The researchers tested Anti-gliadin, anti-endomysial, and tissue transglutaminase antibodies as well as total IgA.
According to the study, out of the 65 couples included into the study group, one of the five couples was positive for the auto-antibodies (7.69%).
According to many studies, CD affects fertility in women. It can also cause a decrease in fertility in men by affecting sperm motility and androgen levels the researchers concluded. The researchers suggest a larger study should be conducted due to the small sample size in this study.
