Rye Can Improve Symptoms Of IBS

(NaturalPath) New research, published in Wiley, has demonstrated that modified rye bread products helped to reduce symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Many North Americans experience symptoms of an irritable bowel. These include abdominal pain and discomfort, diarrhea, bloating, and constipation, among others. Many foods can exacerbate these symptoms of IBS. FODMAPS, which are fermentable oligo- di- and mono-saccharides and polyols, are substances contained in food that can trigger these undesirable IBS symptoms.

Researchers conducted a double blind, cross-over study, in 87 participants to study the differences when eating regular rye bread, compared to low-FODMAP rye bread. The study was conducted over four weeks, and symptoms were individually reported with a standardized symptom severity scoring system (IBS-SSS), and visual analogue scale (VAS).

Results showed that rye products, with low levels of FODMAP constituents, helped to reduce some of the symptoms of IBS. Substituting rye products for other grain products, was shown to decrease abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation. Consuming the modified rye bread option, while including other dietary changes, further improved quality of life scores.

Substituting rye for other grain products can improve IBS symptoms. Further elimination of all FODMAT products may be needed to establish significant results.
