(NaturalPath) New research out of the University Hospital of Saint-Etienne in France, has shown that just 15 minutes of daily walking in seniors reduces mortality risk.
A study monitored 123,000 participants, aged 60 to 65 years old, for a 12-year period. The study examined participation in physical activities, such as: walking, gardening tennis, swimming, and biking.
It was noted that many elderly people don’t exercise due to the belief that they wont be able to do enough exercise to receive any benefit. Recommendations usually suggest that 30 minutes of exercise daily is necessary to receive benefits.
Results from this study shows that even 15 minutes of walking daily was enough to reduce mortality risk by 22 percent. Although more exercise brings more benefits, it is not necessary to improve your health.
“After three weeks, scientists found the young men had physiological characteristics of men twice their age. Being couch potatoes caused them to have faster resting heart rates, higher blood pressure, and lower heart pumping power. What’s more, their muscles were weaker and they added body fat.”
This study emphasizes that even small amounts of moderate exercise are beneficial to improve health.
