Chickenpox, Shingles Vaccine Can Cause Eye Inflammation

(NaturalPath) In a study out of the University of Missouri-Columbia, researchers found that the vaccine that helps prevent the outbreak of chickenpox and shingles can cause corneal inflammation in rare instances. For more than 20 years, that varicella zoster virus has been considered an essential medicine by the WHO. Now that position may be second-guessed.

When national and international registries were checked, at least 20 cases of Keratitis occurred in children and adults within a month of administration of the vaccine. According to Dr. Fraunfelder, chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, “Keratitis, or inflammation of the clear layer on the front of the eye, is a vision issue that can cause serious complications or even permanent damage to your vision if left untreated.” For adults, symptoms of keratitis developed within 24 days of vaccination. For pediatric patients, symptoms of inflammation developed within 14 days.

Fraunfelder noted, “It’s important to note that keratitis associated with these vaccines is very rare, and by itself is not a reason to forego vaccination.” The researchers recommend just talking with your doctor.
