(NaturalPath) A new study, conducted at Texas Tech University, shows that meditation can improve attention, creativity, immune function, emotional self-control, and performance in school.

Researchers in the Department of Psychological Sciences, at Texas Tech University, developed a new meditative technique, called Integrative Body Mind Training (IBMT). This technique uses the principles of mindfulness meditation,. This requires the participant to pay attention, without judgment, to the experiences that are occurring in the present moment. IBMT requires individuals to observe their thoughts and emotions, as if they are not part of oneself, in order to gain a different perspective on reality. This technique requires a coach in order to provide guidance through imagery, and other meditative techniques. Calming music is also used to aid the session.

Results show that IBMT helps to improve attention, relaxation, and body mind awareness, in as little as 20 minutes. Participants also reported a reduction in stress, anxiety, depression, anger, and fatigue. Data shows that this technique can further improve cognitive performance.

It appears that mind-body meditation techniques improve emotional and cognitive performance, in addition to the ability to reduce stress and improve relaxation.
