Honey:
Natural honey not only can provide a soothing coating for an irritated throat but it also has many antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help combat the common cold.
Echinacea and sage:
Combination Echinacea and Sage throat sprays are shown to be useful for reducing sore throat symptoms if used every couple hours. Many natural supplement companies sell combination products with these two as the main ingredients.
Licorice:
Licorice has demulcent properties which means it can help to coat and sooth mucous membranes including the throat. This used in spray or in tea forms can help with sore throat symptoms. If using the root in tea, make sure to steep it for at least 7-10 minutes as the root can take longer to release it’s healing properties in hot water.
Marshmallow root:
No, this is not the kind you roast on the fire. Althea off., more commonly known as marshmallow root, is a soothing choice for the itchy sore throat. It can be steeped in tea to release the benefits of the root similar to licorice.
Salt and water:
Simply add 1tsp of salt to 1 cup of warm water and gargling for 30 seconds as needed. This is thought to help to reduce the inflammation in the area by drawing out fluid with the concentrated salt gargle. Others suggest the salt may help to kill some bacteria that may be causing the sore throat in the first place. Regardless of the mechanism it is a common home remedy used for sore throat.
Chamomile tea:
Another soothing option, chamomile not only helps with calming your body down, especially before bed but it can also be soothing when experiencing a sore throat. This can also be used in combination with honey, ginger, peppermint, lemon or any other of the remedies listed.
Ginger tea:
This herb has great antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that again make it a great choice for when you start to feel the itchy scratch throat the fall season can bring. This can be added to any one of the teas, or in addition to honey. Its natural warming properties help to stimulate your circulation to kick that cough!
Vitamin C:
This can be useful in many acute colds to help boost the immune system as it is a effective antioxidant. As many sore throat symptoms can be due to a viral infection it is good to use a dose of vitamin C 2-3 times a day to help fight off infection.
